State of Delaware

As the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, Delaware rightfully earned its nickname of "First State." Though small in size, it is a treasure trove of history (Fort Delaware), inventions (the Victrola), and garden wonders (Winterthur). State symbols such as the Blue Hen Chicken and peach blossom speak to the character and traditions that formed the state.

The Great Depression transformed Delaware more than any other event in the modern history of the state. Through vintage photographs, this volume records both the gentle philanthropy of the people and the crushing poverty experienced by 11,000 citizens left chronically unemployed for more than a decade.
