Korean Unification and After: U.S. Policy Toward a Unified Korea by Robert Dujarric, Though North Korea has survived longer than many expected, its fate remains uncertain. At any time it could collapse. The United States and its allies thus need to be ready to adapt to a post-North Korea world. The critical question for the United States is the future of its military forces in Korea and Japan. Unification, or any significant lowering of the North Korean threat, could lead the United States to cut its military presence in Asia. This book presents the arguments in favor and against a continued long-term U.S. military presence in Korea and Asia and explores different possible force structures for U.S. forces after unification. It concludes by explaining that after Korean unification the United States military deployment in Korea and Japan, including a large ground component, is vital for the security of the region.

North Korea shares a border with three countries, including China along the Yalu River, Russia along the Tumen River, and South Korea along the DMZ. North Korea - North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (Korean: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk; Hangul: 조선민주주의인민공화국), is a country in East Asia, covering the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. North Koreans more commonly refer their country as Pukchosŏn (북조선, "North Chosŏn"). Demographics of North Korea - The Korean Peninsula was first populated by Tungusic people who migrated from the northwestern regions of Asia. Some of these peoples also populated parts of northeast China (Manchuria); Koreans and Manchurians still show physical similarities. Culture of Korea - The traditional culture of Korea is shared by South Korea and North Korea, but there are regional differences. The political differences between the north and the south of the peninsula also mean that there is a different focus on specific aspects of Korean culture.
